Visual Soundscapes, 2023-current
Visual soundscapes is a continuous project exploring visual phenomena within sound and ways in which field recordings can be used in visual artwork.
This project woks with three themes of creative practice;
- Field recording.
- Digital manipulation and processing of audio.
- Creation of visual artworks from audio.
The interaction between atmosphere and ecosystem, sound is a rich source. It gives voice to the natural world, it speaks of the health of habitat.
The visual soundscapes project creates visual artworks that shift the perceptual mode of sound into visual spaces. Challenging perceptions of sound and encouraging critical thinking about field recording and the processing of data and information.
Working in new locations allows exploration of new information and dialogues. Through field recording I attempt to find places of sonic significance, locations where the presence of sound, or the lack of it, plays an important role.
Audio recordings are manipulated digitally and transformed into visual works through mathematical and data/information processing principles. Mathematical compositions are woven into the algorithms and computer programs used, allowing this process to be guided by intuition and experiences had during the recording process.
Both digital and physical artworks are explored as part of this project. Digital works exist as direct results of the manipulations and processing performed on the audio and can be presented through a range of digital media. Physical works are created through exploring data processing and the resulting digital works in a process-based approach to traditional techniques, such as drawing and painting.
