Bio-Acoustic Synthesis
Ircam, Centre Pompidou, 2024TU Dublin, Ireland.
An ongoing project which explores the relationships between bio-acoustics, technology and ecology.
This work has been carried out as part of PhD research at TU Dublin, Ireland and a 3 month residency at Ircam, Centre Pompidou, Paris and explores;
- Concepts around bio-acoustics/soundscapes and their role in ecology.
- Audio synthesis from a scientific/mathematical perspective.
- Creation of multimedia artworks and sound installations, inviting critical thinking around bio-acoustics.
This project involved a 3 month residency at Ircam which resulting in the creation of a reactive and controlled bio-acoustic synthesis system using machine learning technology trained on audio collected through field recording in different location around the work.
An output from this work is an immersive sound installation that invites the public to penetrate a space transformed by the sound environment: the gallery becomes the cradle of polyphony.
A cacophony of sound is created from a community of small, invisible sonic events hidden throughout the exhibition space. The ‘musical’ system is trepid: it reacts to human presence like a living organism that panics or hushes if visitors become too invasive, too many, or too noisy, taking up their song only when calm has returned.
